You might have the UK’s most common nutrient deficiency and researchers claim it’s on the rise — linked in part to the popularity of fad diets and over-exercising. A lack of iron may lead to more serious health problems too. A study in July showed that a deficiency may raise the risk of heart disease, and this year research has linked anaemia — the most extreme form of low iron — to hearing loss. The World Health Organisation describes iron deficiency as a global public health problem of “epidemic proportions” and “the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world”.
