Even in early March it’s not too late to squeeze in a trip to the mountains before the snow melts in spring. In Chamonix, the mountain town at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, half-term’s crowds have thinned by then and prices have dropped, but there’s still usually plenty of reliable snow in the surrounding ski areas. You might go snowshoeing, visit the many museums and relax in an outdoor spa. Milder temperatures and sunny days towards spring are also better suited to leisurely alfresco lunches and après-ski drinks. Seven nights’ self-catering, including flights from London Gatwick with Tui Airways, coach transfers and 20kg hold luggage, costs £847pp with Crystal Ski, departing on February 28.
