How to Leave the EU – The Short Answer


Here are five things you should know about Article 50. No member state has left the bloc, but the route out is laid out in Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty that governs EU law. European Union politicians are pressuring departing British Prime Minister David Cameron to start negotiations as soon as possible on his country’s departure from the bloc after British citizens voted Thursday in favor of leaving the EU. Mr. Cameron has said it should be for the new prime minister, who he expects to be in office in October, to trigger Article 50, which sets the clock for the two-year negotiations. That starts the clock on a two-year period of negotiations over the terms of the divorce but it can be triggered only when the British government formally notifies the bloc of its intention to leave.
