Ironically, Sri Lanka had one of the strongest performing economies in Asia. Studies show crop yields drop by an alarming 30 per cent under organic farming. When his brother, Mahinda, was president a decade ago, he also encouraged organic farming. Sri Lanka failed to get hold of much organic fertiliser, leaving many farmers with no fertiliser of any sort. Nearly all organic farming, they note, serves only the very richest and the very poorest people in the world.
