It was Peter Dukes who suggested the unlikeliest thing, the most exciting thing: a nice little latte that tasted like pumpkin pie. He called this exotic marvel the Pumpkin Spice Latte. People really, really hate these things – so much so, and for so long now, that the cultural allergy hardly even needs to be articulated. Like red velvet, pumpkin spice is resolutely a thing apart from its original form. Pumpkin spice was bigger than coffee: it was a thing to love and loathe, to Instagram fawningly or dismissively Tweet.
