How the beasts do it better than humans

CARNIVORES THAT HUNT COMMON PREY STEER CLEAR OF EACH OTHER, FINDS STUDY An Asian wild dog, a leopard and a tiger in the forest study area. Leopards, for instance, are hard to find in the tiger-abundant zones of Kaziranga and Ranthambore forests. A study in Thailand five years ago had found wild dogs occurred only in forests where tiger density was very low. The leopards avoided tigers mainly by concentrating on prey in spatially separated areas within the same forest. The researchers believe the behavioural adaptations for coexistence could have evolved in response to being squeezed into protected forest areas where prey are abundant.
