How the Parkland students took over Guardian US

Guardian readers may have seen that last weekend we invited a group of student journalists from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school to guest-edit our US edition. Our guests were not just aspiring journalists but also survivors of the horrific mass shooting at their school in south Florida the previous month. I first came into contact with the Eagle Eye while reporting on the ground in Parkland in the immediate aftermath of the shooting in February. During our editorial meeting earlier in March, which lasted hours longer than we had anticipated, the students packed our notebooks full of potential commissions. Our editors were able to organise a sit-down interview with Senator Bernie Sanders for them and also took their questions to Florida’s Senator Marco Rubio.
