Ilya Mikheyev’s importance to the Maple Leafs was clear in just his second game of the season. Mikheyev fired a short-handed goal and scored again on the power play in Saturday night’s 6-0 win over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Arena. A year ago, he failed to score on 19 shots while the Leafs were short-handed, many of them on breakaways or in close. The Leafs played Mikheyev ahead of physical winger Nick Ritchie, a healthy scratch. “I was happy to have the opportunity to play on the power play,” Mikheyev said.
