In 1968, Jack Heuer – great grandson of Heuer Watchmaking Inc. founder Edouard Heuer – signed a deal to sponsor Swiss racing driver Jo “Seppi” Siffert. Jack Heuer himself said that Siffert would not let him leave their contract signing meeting until Heuer bought a Porsche 911. When the film’s producers contacted Heuer about supplying watches for the movie, Jack Heuer was thrilled. To this day, that model watch is simply called “the Siffert.” But after seeing the samples sent to him, McQueen selected the Heuer Monaco, 1133B, for the film. Like the film and like Steve McQueen himself, the Monaco remains as relevant today as it did 50 years ago.
