The SRO program is not unique to Toronto but it is uniquely controversial here. To its credit, the police board ultimately decided to defer any suspension until the Toronto program is properly evaluated. In the aftermath, Toronto’s two publicly funded school boards teamed up with the police to introduce the SRO program. Jefferys school initially resisted the idea, but later embraced it after another teen was stabbed and yet another caught with a loaded handgun. Some feel frustrated that the SRO program isn’t comprehensive but perhaps unfairly selective, rotating 36 uniformed cops through 75 schools across the city.
