We’re not allowed to go outside.”Visitors pause at a memorial outside the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in October. But I also have experienced, as the wife of a Mexican immigrant and the mother of a Mexican American daughter, how diversity can be a very real measure of safety. Diversity lets us know that we are in a space where difference is not likely to be associated with danger. Thinking of the diversity of our neighbourhood, and the growing, hostile whiteness of so many other American spaces, I decided to talk with my daughter about the shooting. This is a lesson I believe my whole neighbourhood has learned in the wake of the Tree of Life shooting.
