How my craving for Ontario peaches got me thinking about transit and food access

My favourite time of the year is the small window between late July and early August when Ontario peaches are at their fuzziest, juiciest, sweetest and plumpest. Normally I would get a basket or two at the farmers’ market at David Pecaut Square on the way to work, or the St. Lawrence Market that’s a short walk from the Star office. Plus, as someone who has covered how the pandemic has affected independent businesses extensively I want to support small-scale food suppliers whenever possible. Of course, my desire for a locally grown peach is frivolous, but it speaks to the larger issue of food accessibility. My closest farmers’ market is the North York Farmers’ Market held at Mel Lastman Square every Thursday morning from mid July through October.
