The industry that for 200 years helped raise the standard of living for much of humanity to unprecedented levels – fossil fuel companies – is now threatening life as we know it around the world. Fossil fuel companies are posting record profits. Many fossil fuel companies also hide behind tactical greenwashing tools and broad long-term commitments like "Net Zero by 2050". Fossil fuel companies also increasingly use small strategic investments in decarbonisation to conceal an overall lack of progress. In the UK, for example, the Anglican church has recently announced that it is divesting from fossil fuels, given the repeated failure of fossil fuel companies to meet their targets.
