How important is Black History in UK schools?

Although schools in the UK are permitted to teach students about black history and about black people’s contribution to Britain, only 11% of GCSE curriculums refer to how black people had contributed to British society. This failure to teach students in the UK about black history leads to a widespread ignorance surrounding the topic, especially in predominantly white schools. However, if black history is taught in schools, slavery is the first thing we are taught. Although slavery is such an important topic that needs to be discussed in schools, it is also even more important to teach students about how black people contributed to this world before racism even existed. We need to carry on pushing forward, carry on protesting and carry on demanding a change in the school curriculum in order to inform the next generation more about black history.
