On Sunday, global sea surface temperatures reached a record temperature — right on the heels of the world’s hottest week on record, according to the UN. Meanwhile, last month was the warmest June ever recorded, according to a U.S. government agency that tracks the climate. This surpasses the previous 50.6 C record set in July 2017, the China Meteorological Administration said in a statement to the Guardian. On July 7, average global temperatures hovered around 17.24 C, according to the UN — 0.3 C higher than the previous record set in August 2016. Earlier this year, the WMO said the world is stepping into “uncharted territory,” with global temperatures likely to surpass 1.5 C of warming within the next five years.
