Sara Bareilles always describes her life the same way to interviewers: Before Waitress and after Waitress. “It changed just about everything,” the singer-songwriter turned Tony-nominated musical score writer says in a Toronto hotel room just before Waitress opens at the Ed Mirvish Theatre. And not just collaborators, but dear friends and my boyfriend — my community changed dramatically.”It’s appropriate in a way, because Waitress is also the story of a woman whose life is transformed through her connections with the people in her community. Last year ,she co-hosted the Tony Awards with Josh Groban (another pop musician who found his way to musical theatre). Bareilles is proud that Waitress was one of those unfortunately rare shows that was developed by an all-female creative team.
