To describe The Leftovers in terms of plot would be a disservice to both the program and potential viewers. This weird manicured and concocted bit of programming – a parable as much as a drama – should have no right being as emotionally engaging as it is. And yet, it causes genuine feelings of joy and despair even in the most civically minded resident of ghoul island. Watching these scenarios dramatized on the small screen forces us to consider the voids – both physical and emotional – in our own lives. We don’t quite know why we feel the reverberation, but we feel it all the same.
