Two-thirds of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has already been damaged by rising sea temperatures Getty ImagesScientists are looking to the heavens in the latest attempt to save the Great Barrier Reef from the devastating effects of climate change. Work has begun on plans to enlarge clouds above the reef in what has been described as an 11th-hour attempt to save the coral below. The move comes as fresh studies show that much of the coral on the 1,400-mile-long reef is dead or at risk of dying because of rising water temperatures. A process known as marine cloud brightening can produce larger and more reflective clouds, which limit temperatures in the water below. John Latham, a British scientist, first suggested the theory as a potential means of controlling global warming 30 years ago in an article published by Nature.
