Greenhouse gas emissions from transport make up about 20 per cent of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions each year. A seven-kilometre car commute in Christchurch, from the suburb of Hornby to Cashel St, would cost the environment 2.56 kilograms of CO2. In Auckland, a 22 kilometre car commute from Manukau to Central Auckland would create 3.58 kilograms of CO2. Choosing to work from home to save the environment or living closer to work would also slash a person's personal carbon emissions, he said. JOHN SELKIRK/STUFF The more passengers in a car, train or bus, the lower the emissions per person.
