“Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Michigan and Wisconsin,” the headline reads, piggybacking on other recent revelations about how accounts linked to the Russian government had invested in ads apparently aimed at influencing last year’s presidential election. There’s been a looming question of whether someone in the Trump campaign may have pointed Russians to particular geographies. That the Russians targeted two places of such importance to the race appears to point toward an answer — if you choose to isolate that one bit of evidence. There’s an irony to all of this news about Russian meddling and the role played by Facebook. During the 2016 election, Trump benefited from a steady drip of revelations about Clinton’s use of a private email server and stolen emails from her campaign chairman.
