Professional tap dancers in Canada are a rare breed, but they’re not altogether extinct – perhaps because they’re highly evolved. Improvisation is integral to tap dance as an art form, and Cornell warns that it’s being drummed out of young people’s lives. Montgomery, for instance, swapped a promising career in investment banking in Manhattan for a tap dancer’s uncertain existence. “It’s odd to me that North America has almost dismissed tap dancing. Tap dance is this meeting place where we can all agree on: 1, 2, dap-bap-ba-dee-da-dum … It makes things simple.”
