It gave her a breadth of experience that has been the foundation of her career in real estate development, where she now heads up the company that provides property advisory, development and management expertise to York University. Now a new real estate development incubator called FutureBUILDS is trying to knock down barriers to the development world by filling in some of the blanks for Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC). Monumental’s research shows that about 33 per cent of racialized people working in real estate development say the industry’s equity and diversity programs are focused on junior positions. We want this to be for folks who want to become real estate entrepreneurs. Real estate development needs innovation and disruption that could potentially come from a huge swathe of people that feels locked out.
