China had approached Venezuela much as it has many smaller economies. The practice has always had a two-fold purpose: One is economic, to gain China access to markets and frequently essential raw materials. When China began its effort on this side of the world, Venezuela must have seemed an ideal point of entry. Beijing proceeded in Venezuela much as it has in East Asia and elsewhere along its Belt and Road route. To date, Beijing has given no hint of its reaction to the Venezuela lesson.
