So is the shooter a psycho, or just an everyday American, living out the Wild West fantasy that underpins one of his nation’s defining myths? But in a fraught election year, it also addresses an increasingly divided nation’s struggles with how to be humane. The moneyed guests at Westworld indulge in a real life version of an immersive gaming experience, with a stereotypical 19th-century Wild West town at its centre. Michael Crichton, who directed the original Westworld, said he intentionally filmed scenes in the theme park in a clichéd style because they were based on the clichés people wanted to act out.
