One aspect of President Trump’s militarized photo-op takeover of the Washington DC July 4th celebration has not received enough attention. Lots of stories have reported that Trump’s tanks are unusual, controversial, a waste of money, a threat to infrastructure, and a potential politicization of what should be a nation gathering together to celebrate liberty and freedom. Missing is that rolling military vehicles, even on flatbed trucks, through the streets of an American city as a way to celebrate strength and power dishonors the victims and survivors of 9/11 terrorist attacks. Military parades dishonoring shared tragedies can be added to the reasons for the current decline in American pride. That’s what watching a military parade in an American city actually feels like.
