Once the willpower muscle tires or the tank empties out, you allegedly experience “ego depletion,” and you run the risk of giving up. Over the past few years, that research has been debunked, and new research is showing that willpower may work differently. By contrast, the participants who did not see willpower as a finite resource showed no signs of ego depletion. Individual attitudes about ego depletion, self-discipline and self-control — and any other limiting beliefs — may be adversely holding people back. Even though research is continuing about the true nature of willpower, you may want to ditch the concept of “ego depletion” in favor of willpower as a fluctuating feeling.
