Other forces driving nonadaptive evolution change include mutations that might increase the growth rate of several tissues or organs at once. So it is with the evolution of the human brain—which gave rise to the human mind. Whether the consciousness, reason, and awareness displayed by humans beings are the telos, the goal of the universe, I cannot say. Miller believes that science will eventually explain in more detail how human consciousness arises from the workings of the brain.
