When you walk into Sully’s Boxing Gym, in the basement of 1554 Dundas St. W., the sounds immediately confirm you’ve entered an entirely different world from the one you left in the Little Portugal neighbourhood above ground. Beyond the sounds, the sights tell the story of a historic gym that’s attracted pro and amateur boxers since 1943. For most of his adult life, he worked at MLSE and spent his leisure time training at a boxing gym. That all happened during the reign of Earl “Sully” Sullivan, who in 1964 took over a small gym on Queen Street West after its original owner, promoter John Finlay Allen, died.
