Sony’s chart-topping $2.3 billion purchase of EMI changes the face of music. From the moment it was confirmed that the Japanese technology conglomerate was swallowing the majority of EMI Music Publishing, record company executives saw it as an escalation of the war for content and consolidation. Sony is raising its stake in EMI Music Publishing to 90% by buying the 60% held by Mubadala Investment Company, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund. The battle is being joined over streaming music, television shows, movies and games via Sony’s PlayStation platform. “Sony music has picked its battles and music IP is one of them,” said Pinar Ozcan, Professor of Strategic Management at Warwick Business School.
