There’s a lot to be said about all this, but I’m a scientist and a science communicator, first and foremost. I like numbers, facts and figures; they tend to cut through the grim and terrifying haze and put things into perspective. (Incidentally, the amount of deaths by other firearm incidents – including race attacks, domestic violence incidents, suicides and so on – are magnitudes higher.) Here’s the thing though: there are less attacks in the West nowadays than at any point in modern history. Show your children, if you have any, that terror doesn’t win, and that the world is nothing to be afraid of.
