Black, the son of TSN broadcaster Rod Black, was the first Canadian picked in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, 33rd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers. The pick itself wasn’t historic; there have been lots of Canadians taken in the opening round since the draft was first created in 1965. In addition to Black, another 16 Canadians were taken across 40 rounds of this year’s draft. His power and ability to spray the ball all over the field across three seasons at Wright State University essentially guaranteed his spot as an early pick. “I think that was a major turning in my love of baseball,” Black said of his chat with Hill.
