The proposal had aroused a deep anger, shared by many Polish women, over the church’s increasing influence on their lives. New York magazine invited Polish women to advise their American counterparts how best to defend their reproductive rights. Any attempts to liberalise Poland’s abortion law, however, must contend with the entrenched power of the country’s Catholic church.
