Manchester United have recently become the first major English Premier League (EPL) club to hire a full-time counter-terrorism manager. A former inspector from Greater Manchester police’s specialist search unit has been working alongside the club’s current senior security team, with an emphasis on counter-terrorism and general security improvements. There was also the time when a security firm was contracted to test security and Man Utd's emergency response protocols. The Manchester United ‘bomb’ alert cost the club about $3.76m, because they had to refund all tickets, and allow ticket holders from both the home side and visitors Bournemouth to watch the re-arranged game for free. Proactively investing in, and engaging with, security standards and safety standards of security services and a fearful public is now a must for European football.
