An investigation published on the Italian magazine L’Espresso has put under the spotlight the economic resources needed to fund that objective. Just a few weeks ahead of the European elections, rumors of political interference from Moscow generate quite some concerns. Moreover, in 2018, Western countries increased economic sanctions in response to the Skripal case. If Salvini’s populist allies in the EU are strengthened after European elections as it is expected to happen, the issue might be put again on the table.
