Micheline MaynardIf you were born in Ann Arbor, Mich., like I was, you most likely had your first ice cream cone at the Washtenaw Dairy. On Friday and Saturday nights, Washtenaw Dairy becomes Ann Arbor's doughnut equivalent of Insomnia Cookies. On the first weekend alone, Washtenaw Dairy delivered 100 dozen doughnuts. That's less than the price of four hipster doughnuts at any big city doughnut shop, but Washtenaw Dairy has always been known as a value proposition since it opened in 1934. On a typical day, the shop might sell between 20 and 50 dozen doughnuts to retail and wholesale customers.
