Ellen DeGeneres, on occasion, has promoted GoFundMe campaigns, including one to cover expenses for the victim of a mountain biking accident. Some news organizations have publicized medical crowdfunding campaigns, too. They recently published a paper on the topic of personal crowdfunding for medical expenses in the journal Social Science & Medicine. They noticed a preponderance of medical campaigns for patients in states that had opted not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, they said, medical crowdfunding campaigns provide a "living archive" of Americans' struggles to cope with illness in today's health-care system and in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.
