Jayakumar argues, not unreasonably, that such heavy taxation will be punitive for moviegoers and producers alike, and ruinous for the Tamil film industry. State government regulations keep movie ticket prices artificially low; in Tamil Nadu, prices have been fixed in some areas at a maximum of 120 rupees (about US$1.80) for years, making film production and exhibition a risky proposition. For reasons that defy my personal comprehension, Tamil Nadu has singled out the film industry as a target for punishment. Tamil Nadu's film industry is a treasure, a source of great enjoyment for many millions of movie lovers across south India, and millions more across the country and around the world. The legislators of Tamil Nadu should re-think and revise their destructive policies before they smother their splendid golden goose.
