How Indiana’s Levi Coffin House helped over 1,000 slaves escape to freedom


For today’s installment, we spotlight a house that played a very indispensable role during the Undergound Railroad movement, the Levi Coffin House. Levi CoffinDuring the Underground Railroad movement, the Coffins used their home as a haven for runaway slaves escaping to Canada. The home became popularly known as “The Grand Central Station” of the Underground Railroad due to its strategic location. That, however, did not stop them from helping fugitive slaves escape. The Coffins reportedly helped more than a thousand fugitive slaves who passed through their Newport home escape to freedom.
