Unlike the hidebound old British companies Unilever had early recognised the need to Indianise management. Informally he’d been told that his future with the company was bright (he was ultimately to become the first Indian chairman). How did Indian companies cope? In any case they were all flush with money after World War II, when most Indian companies made profits supplying the Allied effort, and could afford to wait.
