Facebook says it has learned from mistakes made during the 2016 U.S. election and it’s committed to preventing a similar disinformation campaign from spreading during Canada’s upcoming federal election. The idea of a widespread disinformation campaign — run by a hostile nation-state, no less — took the company by surprise. At the moment, Facebook sees no coordinated campaign to spread disinformation or any attempt to undermine the election, Chan said. During the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta was the victim of a phishing campaign that resulted in his email account being hacked. The revelations in the emails led to a steady drip of embarrassing media stories as the campaign entered the final months.
