Instead, the world has come to Taormina, for the 43rd meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) group of major advanced economies. It’s a historic occasion, the first G7 meeting for Trump, Macron, May and Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni. San Domenico Palace Hotel, where many of the G7 meetings are taking place, was founded as a convent in 1374 by the community of the Dominican Friars Preachers. Less auspiciously, the hotel was the headquarters of the Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, commander of the German forces in Italy, in the final campaign of the Second World War.
