The notion that commerce and conservation could thrive and discover common ground once seemed far-fetched. Now the forces of profit and responsibility to shareholders don’t seem so diametrically opposed to values like sustainability and environmental stewardship. One technology being used by many of these companies is a geographic information system (GIS), and this makes sense. Analysts also added AI-based predictive algorithms to their GIS maps and imagery to detect areas that are prime candidates for destructive deforestation. Companies that expand power production that is environmentally and socially sensitive can share stories and data related to the success of their efforts through GIS maps and dashboards.
