Power Up China is set to dominate the EV battery sector, with CATL the largest global player. Beijing rolled out a subsidy program starting in 2013 to encourage local and foreign auto makers to sell more EVs. “It was incredibly frustrating for us,” said a former executive at one foreign battery maker. Tesla’s Nevada “gigafactory,” by comparison, currently produces around 24 GWh of EV batteries a year. In June, Beijing announced plans to scrap its controversial restrictions on foreign EV batteries and reopen its market to the big Korean and Japanese players.
