The use by white supremacists of Reddit to organise last year’s violent rally in Virginia was a catalyst for change at the digital giant. Messages to Pao’s Reddit inbox threatened to harm her young daughter, and posts on Reddit compared her to dictators. He had reason to fear the whims of the community, but the trepidation with which he approached Reddit’s community ended up undercutting it. But a year and a half into his tenure, his thinking had evolved – as had that of the community team. If Reddit had made such a move at any time in its past, the results could have been catastrophic.
