How COVID-19 has disproportionately affected women


Economic pressures, the threat to the health of millions, the change of everything we knew to be normal — the COVID-19 pandemic has changed almost every aspect of everyone’s life. In particular, there is an increasing body of evidence supporting the idea that as a group, women are being particularly adversely affected. New data shows not only is women’s participation in the workforce at a historical low, but racialized, low-income and immigrant women have been especially hard hit by the pandemic’s economic impacts. An Ontario Chamber of Commerce report released Sept. 9 on the gendered economic impacts of COVID-19 warns that while the long-term implications have yet to be seen, the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women could undo years of progress.
