Today’s EU, comprised of 28 enormously heterogenous countries, simply is not sustainable. If done adroitly, Brussels may come to the realization that Brexit provides a unique opportunity—in fact just the excuse needed—for proactive fundamental overhaul of the EU. The opposite is true for NAFTA, encompassing the 3 contiguous countries comprising North America, 2 of which are highly comparable. As discussed in an earlier column in this space, NAFTA is by no means immune from these costs. Of course, when Trump says “NAFTA” he’s really referring to “Mexico”, far less so to Canada.
