While Pilot Flying J is privately owned, the company decades ago opted to establish a board of directors. They grew close again years later when Mr. Haslam fundraised for Mr. Corker’s first Senate campaign in 1994. Mr. Diggs shadowed Mr. Haslam for a day as he flew to visit Pilot Flying J stores. Mr. Haslam says he relates to Mr. Diggs’s focus and drive, and it inspires him to think beyond corporate profits. Mr. Diggs is “working as hard as we work … but is doing it for a different cause,” Mr. Haslam says.
