How AI is(n’t) Used in College Writing Courses, and How it Could BeIgnoring the issue won’t make it disappear. How I’ve Approached AI as an EducatorMy teaching experience during ChatGPT’s first year hasn’t led me to the view, held by some educators, that AI chatbots spell the end of writing courses. Educators should be talking with each other and their students about how AI can be used as a learning and writing tool. Most introductory college-level writing courses are made up of students from a variety of backgrounds. In class, I have my students read an essay — that I asked ChatGPT to write — about the dangers AI poses to writing courses (I don’t divulge its authorship at first).
