New Zealand leading classical pianist Michael Houstoun will display his new-found love of jazz in a concert series with the Rodger Fox Big Band in Palmerston North. Houstoun and Fox have performed together before, but this time instead of playing jazz adaptations of classical pieces Houstoun will play two of Vannelli’s most enduring numbers, especially written for him. The friendship between Fox and Houstoun has flourished in the last decade. Houstoun said he admired Fox as a “fabulous musician and a wildman on the trombone”Their collaboration has seen Houstoun move from classics into jazz, overcoming challenges to become comfortable with the rhythm.
