Housing providers, developers join forces to fight for affordable housing

Private developers and social housing providers are joining the push for the federal and provincial governments to contribute stable funding and land to solve the city’s affordable housing crisis. The group, which includes the association representing GTA developers, co-op housing providers and charitable organizations, has sent a public letter calling for a renewed partnership ahead of a summit planned in Toronto on Friday. It comes after Mayor John Tory called together the mayors of Vancouver, Edmonton and other municipal officials to urge the other governments to return to the table after years of divestment in social and affordable housing. “When the supply of housing falls behind or into a state of disrepair we, as housing providers, builders, non-profit and charitable organizations, see first-hand the negative impact on our citizens and our city,” the letter reads. Signed by the Building Industry and Land Development Association, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto, the Daniels Corporation, Evergreen Cityworks, Toronto Community Housing and the United Way Toronto, the letter asks for long-term support for social housing repairs, including most of a needed $2.6 billion in Toronto Community Housing repairs.
